Cops With 'Assault Rifles' Raid Low-Stakes Tavern Poker Game In North Carolina
Police with their weapons apparently drawn told poker players in a North Carolina gaming establishment to put their hands on their heads during a gathering on Thursday night.
News-Record.com reported that no patrons were charged, but authorities did serve a criminal summonses on the Greensboro business — Aces and Ales Tavern and Gaming.
“I would have thought we were armed robbers or murderers when they came in on us,”
one of the owners told the News-Record. “It was one of the scariest things I ever went through. All of a sudden, you’re looking at assault rifles and guns.”
Police raids on Texas hold’em poker games are not uncommon in the state, which views poker as a game of chance and thus gambling under the law.
North Carolina has historically been very strict on poker games, but this past summer did authorize its only casino to offer live table games. However, it would be a monopoly.
